What it is is a metroidvania puzzle platformer with mechanics similar to Portal and The Talos Principle. Most puzzle platformers have levels that you play one after another. This game is just one big puzzle that you go through, like real metroidvania games, but instead of having simple mechanics like "the red gun opens red doors" you have crazy tools like a portal that lets your get smaller or bigger, or another one that lets you go back in time, and then you have to figure out what to do with them in order to open up new sections of the game.The puzzles are really well designed, not too easy, not too difficult and the map is a good dimension for this type of game. There are also shortcuts that open up as you progress and that let you teleport to the game's main area so you don't have to keep going through the same difficult sections over and over as you run around between sections of the game.If you like metroidvania plaformers and challenging puzzles, Gateways should be on your list.. Gateways has a decent concept, sort of in the vein of those Portalesque games that followed in it's wake, but a reasonably decent game.Although, unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish the game. The puzzle design has some of the most difficult puzzles in the game being mandatory to complete, which wouldn't be a problem normally. But, the mechanic you unlock near the end of the game that enables these puzzles involves a lot of key timing and platforming that ended up being far too twitchy for me to finish.Ultimately, because I have no 'maybe' option, I have to vote No on Gateways because of this. Perhaps if they had structured the game a little differently I could recommend it. But sadly, if any of what I mentioned seems like a red flag for you, I'd look elsewhere.. Fun game. That's all you need to know. That's all that matters.. my head hurts. This game is like Portal X50. Soon as I got to the time manipulation the game got a bit confusing. I'll likely play with it some more later but so far I love the game.. Very early opinion : it starts like a boring "jumping on♥♥♥♥♥♥quot; game and becomes good enough when mixed with the portal mechanic.It won't feel original, replacing the "portal" name with "gateway" but it plays nicely enough to fit the expecations of a very low-priced game. It know I will relaunch it from time to time.. Horrible to look at but don't let that decieve you. Excellent hybrid of Metroidvania and Portal like mechanics.Except the Time Gun, ♥♥♥♥ that thing.. During the first hour I felt there wasn't much to this game. I almost put it down and cut my losses. However, I kept playing knowing that the game was progressing quickly. To my surprise some of the latter puzzles were VERY CHALLENGING. A few of them were quite mind bending. This game certainly made my head hurt. I'm glad I'd stuck with it.. Very nice puzzle game. The puzzles are challenging (sometimes so much that I'm really grateful to the developer for including the purchasable solutions), the controls work fine and the art stile is not bad. What I don't like about it is that it depends heavily on upgrades, a ton of the areas are locked at the beginning and can only be reached as you slowly get the various guns and upgrades that allow you to solve the puzzles that lead to those areas. I bought this game because I assumed it would have been a 2d version of portal, and at the beginning it was. But portal's low skill floor was the thing that made it such an awesome game: you had one simple tool with 2 modes and you had to master them. As you progressed through the game the levels became more and more difficult, but the tools you had stayed the same, which allowed it to be a game with huge depth with very little complexity.Something that this game is sadly not. But it's still enjoyable, for a few hours. At 0.99€ it's a no brainer.
